Rutledge - Month Three

During the first week of Rut's third month we started giving him formula for his last feeding. It took him about 5 seconds to figure out what to do with it! The first night he had the formula he drank 5 oz in about 15 minutes. This is the same baby that takes 45 minutes to nurse! Well, he spit most of it up after about 45 minutes. Everything was soaked! The sleep wedge, the sheet. I actually went to get some groceries so Josh had to field that one on his own and he did great! He cleaned everything up, gave Rutledge 2oz of breat milk and put him to bed! The next night he took the formula and never had another problem!

Rutledge has a bedtime routine, although the time varies a little. Lights are off, daddy gives him his last bottle and puts him down for the night (whether he is awake or sleeping). We have been really lucky and this has worked. Even if Rutledge is awake he will lay in the bassinet until he falls asleep. No crying! Well, he will sometimes let out a squeal if he looses his paci before he falls asleep! :) He started out the month sleeping about 8-9 hours at a time and by the end of the month he was stretching it to 10 sometimes.

This was a big month for Rut! He started to venture out into public places this month for shopping and such and to holiday family get-togethers. He is starting to drool and blow bubbles!

Rutledge is also becoming quite the talker! Hes figured out how to make noise so now hes making all kinds of sounds. I definitly think he tries to imitate the sounds we make when we have "conversations"! After hes done eating, he is so chatty, he will just talk and talk and giggle and have the best time!
He had a MAJOR growth spurt right around Thanksgiving! He weighed 11 1/2 pounds the week before Thanksgiving and within a few weeks he weighed 14 1/2 pounds! He was sometimes eating 7-8 oz at a feeding! It was like watching him change and grow before our eyes. Every day we would wake up and look at him and think, WOW hes changed more or his chest is more filled out, or his little legs are chunkier...
Rutledge has started to love his pack and play and just hanging out with us in the den. He loves walks in the stroller, car rides, oh and new development!- when hes sleepy, he LOVES to be flipped on his tummy and sleep on your chest/belly! Oh my goodness if this isnt the best thing ever! I cant wait until naptime to see if he needs that extra comfort and if he does I flip him right on over and take a nap with my sweet boy! The best! He wakes up all sweaty and I usually have a big drool stain on my shirt - love it! He doesnt really dig tummy time and usually just buries his face into the blanket and grunts and twists around his head. Josh says he looks like a pig rooting around the ground for food! I usually watch him do this for a minute or two then I cant stand to see him with his faced crammed into the blanket so I flip him back over! :)
OH Yeah! He moved to the Crib this month... It had to happen. I missed looking at him when I was falling asleep, but I think I actually slept better the first night he was in his room. And he was so cute, I think he knew he had more space because he feel asleep with his arms stretched straight out from his sides and his legs were spread as far apart as they could go! He looked a little like a cheerleader! So cute, he also started stretching out his sleep to 10 hours that night. So, I think it was time for the crib. This month was also the month that our sweet baby started to not look so much like a tiny baby anymore, but he started to look like a little boy. Man, even though he is still so young, it really does take you by suprise. One day youre holding your baby and you realize hes heavier and his legs stretch across you and his facial features are like real people features. Its like you can almost see the boy that this little baby of yours will become. Now, hes not a baby that you are feeding and putting to sleep and cuddling. Hes a boy who you talk to, and play with, and tickle, and he talks back, he laughs, he has conversations. You can start to determine what he really likes, what makes him smile, discover where he is ticklish. You realize, "Wow, they REALLY DO grow up fast"

Rutledge - Month Two

Wow, as soon as Rutledge entered his second month of life so many new things started happening.

He first started stretching out his sleeping at night. He began having a sort of bedtime and slept for 6-8 hours at a time. The first night this happened I woke up at the 8th hour of him sleeping and was frantic! I also woke to find him sleeping on his side one night when I had taken the sleep wedge out of the bassinet. I decided to put the sleep wedge back in!

He started to smile, and even giggle, alot! All we have to do is talk, or sing, or tickle his little chin and he gives us the biggest, gaping, gummy smile! It makes me so happy!

He also began to "talk". Instead of his usual grunts and sighs, he really began to try to make noises while we talked or sang to him. It is honestly the cutest thing ever! He purses his lips, his eyes get wide, and you can hear him pushing air through his lips and then finally he will make the cutest "oooo" sound. And I tell ya, he looks so excited and proud of himself when he makes that noise! I love it! By the way, he talked to his Daddy before talking to his Mama.

He made his first friends! They are the green whale and the orange fish that hang from his swing! He can spend a good 10 minutes smiling and talking to those two friends while he swings. It is adorable!

Oh yeah, he LOVES kisses from his daddy. Josh will kiss Rut on his forehead and Joshs beard will tickle his nose and he will smile so big!

Rut is sleepin' like a wildman, kicking his legs, arms up above his head, he even slides around in the bassinet during the night!

He still loves car rides, the swing, walks in the stroller, singing, his paci, his sleep sheep, likes tummy time, loves to sleep on his daddys chest, and he loves to be held while he naps, so glad I have a snuggler.

A few things stopped happening when our boy turned two months also. He no longer folds up his legs when you pick him up (loved that), he still struggles with gas but hes not having quite as hard of a time with that (yay!).

He had his two month appointment. Weight - 11lbs 6 oz, Length 23 inches, Head 16 inches.

He let out one big wail when he got his shots but calmed right down once they were done!

Rutledge's First Month

Man, that first month went by so so so fast! But it amazes me how many things happened in that first month and how much Rut changed! I have to say, I was excited to get our baby boy home, but you know, the hospital wasn't that bad. We didn't have to worry about cooking, I could have water or coffee or sprite anytime I wanted :), and there was always somebody around to answer a question we might have about nursing or about Rutledge! But, of course, I wanted to take him home! The first month was so many things. Stressful, tiring, exciting, full of love and emotions, a special bonding time for our new family, and learning about our new baby boy, getting to know what kind of person he is, wonderful, happy. That first month was like no other time in my life. It was kind of surreal.

These are some things we learned about our Rutty Duck. Right from the beginning Rut ate really often. Every two or two and a half hours. And it took him about 45 minutes to an hour to nurse. So, for the first month I was nursing all the time! But I love it! At night he ate about every 4-6 hours. I started with him in the pack and play at the end of the bed. That didn't last long! I was crawling to the end of the bed every time he made a sound, and let me tell you, he is a noisy sleeper. He grunts, and kicks his legs, and also makes the sweetest sigh sounds. He actually startles himself and wakes himself up with the noises he makes! So cute when hes sleeping peacefully and then grunts or squeals so loud he wakes up and has the most concerened, worried look on his face! So, we borrowed a bassinet and put him right by me! So much better, I could just lean over and check on him! Oh and he does the cutest thing when he falls asleep - when hes in that inbetween state, his eyes roll back into his head and he makes lots of funny facial expressions, including a big giant smile, even a tiny giggle. Josh and I love to watch him while hes falling asleep so we can see his big gummy smile! I have only HAD to rock him to sleep a few times, but he really likes to rock. Even though they say you shouldnt get in the habit of rockin' baby to sleep, I love it and give in sometimes and rock him, and sing, and watch him get so quite, his little hands folded on his chest. His eyes will get heavy, and they'll start to roll, and he will smile and sigh until he is fast asleep. Heaven. He also loves his sleep sheep that makes an ocean wave sound when hes falling asleep!

For the first two weeks he slept alot and never ever cried! But man, around the third or fourth week, he really woke up. He still didn't cry that much, maybe a little around feeding time. But he was so aware and watched everything!

Josh and I have so so much fun loving on our little baby boy! He is always so happy and easy going. He loved bath time from the start! He also loves the swing. He was a little unsure the first time we put him in, but after that he was very content in it! He also loves walks in the sling and the stroller, loves car rides, and LOVES his paci! And he actually likes it when we sing to him!

Oh yeah, our baby boy is so so gassy! I mean all the time he is gassy. This caused ALOT of distress for me when he was so new. He would strain and push from the gas and I was so worried he would hurt himself pushin'! I mean, his face would turn red, he would grunt, and twist and turn. And then, once he finished that, he would end up having the hiccups. I mean really big hiccups and his whole body would move! I just knew this couldnt be normal! I called the doctor a few times about this. :) But they said it was normal. (I didn't believe 'em:) ) Oh, and when hes pushin he pokes his lips out and his eyes cross! Pretty funny!

Our little man has been given lots of nicknames sinces he has been home - RuttyDuck, rutty poo, pretty fella, rut rut.

Oh yeah, he had his two week appointment and everything was great! He weighed 11 lbs 2 oz, length was 22 inches.

Rutledge's Birth Story

So, our sweet little boy is already almost two months old and I haven't recorded, or written down, any of the details of those two months! I told myself I would be that mama who wrote all that fun stuff down so that when my children asked questions about when they were little, I could tell them all the fun details. I have a terrible long term memory! So, I'm finally putting these things down in our brand new blog. This blog will be a combination of our family updates and Josh's hunting/fishing outings. He is always coming home with these exciting outrageous stories from huntung or fishing and he is the BEST storyteller - he can really put you in the moment! So, I've been telling him he needs to record those too so Rut can one day read all the fun times his daddy had - hopefully this blog will be easy enough that he will actually do it!

This picture is at Lees wedding rehearsal, I was about 6 months pregnant. I don't think I allowed many more pics to be taken of me after this!

When we found out we were pregnant I immediately thought that I wanted to have a natural birth, for all the obvious reasons, AND too many episodes of "A Baby Story" really made me an Epidural hater! So, I borrowed Erin's Bradley Method book and began reading - (well, i read the high points, those of you that know me well know that I dont always finish the books i start). I was totally mentally ready to push that baby out. I was also "planning" on having him late so that I could stay out of school(work) as close to Christmas as possible, postponing him going to daycare until January! But...around 37 weeks I started getting antsy, wondering when things would start happening! I was so ready to meet baby Rut! We had an appointment the Wednesday before our due date (Sunday, September 20). Nothing - he was camped out in there, all curled up and cozy, sucking on his thumb!

This is our 17 week ultrasound. Little man was sucking his thumb, which he still does today if he doesn't have his paci!

At my next appointment, the day after my due date, Monday September 21st, I just knew I would have dialated a little and we could induce. But, we an ultrasound and he was estimated being 9lbs 5 oz. I totally didn't believe he was that size though, It seems like babies are always estimated on the large side during those ultrasounds. So, I was still thinking in my mind that I would meet with my doctor and we would induce! But, still, nothing was happening, and that, along with his size, she said we'd have to have a c-section. So, September 22nd was the day. I had one of my favorites, a giant Schlotzkys roast beef sammy, the night before! Josh went deer hunting! The next morning we were to be at the hospital at 10 and the c-section was scheduled for 12.

This is the deer Josh killed the night before we had Rutledge.

When we got to the hospital there were tons of paperwork to do. I was a little on edge thinking about the epidural but we were both so excited. I was soon puttin' on my gown and getting my IV - three tries to get that in! We were a little disappointed when we heard we had been pushed back to one. But, pretty soon I was getting that epidural. Well, sorta. They tried two or three times to insert the epidural but for some reason it just wouldn't go... Josh was told to sit down during this, I guess to prevent any possible passing out (Not that he would have passed out). My poor nurse, I dont remember her name, but she was so good! I was not a fun patient during the epidural. Anyway, since that didnt work, they decided to do a spinal block once I was in the OR. At that point I was just thinking - Maybe I shouldn't go through with this, I mean, he would come out on his own eventually right???!!! Well, once we got in the OR things happened really fast. The spinal was successful and, in what seemed like just a few minutes, Josh was back at my side - looking quite handsome in his scrubs - holding my hand. I felt so much more relaxed once he was with me. He did great. He stayed in such a positive, happy attitude the entire time and it really helped me not worry as much! He also took some GREAT photos of Rutledge being born and in the nursery. I later found out that while I was enduring much pain and humility while being prepared for surgery, Josh was in the waiting room giving quite the fashion show in his scrubs!

I have to say that the actual c-section experience, minus the epidural, was more pleasant than I expected. Dr. Rainwater was great! The entire time she made conversation with us, the atmosphere was so pleasant! I never heard her ask for an instrument or do anything that you would expect in an operation! She laughed and talked with us and really made a good memory, instead of a sterile, serious environment. The first thing she said when she saw the baby was "Look at that Head!". Until then I wasn't sure of what was going on, but when we heard that we knew Rutledge was almost here! Only seconds later we heard laughter/cheers from everyone in the OR followed by a really loud rythmic cry from our baby boy. It was the most wonderful sound, I can still hear it in my mind. I dont think I'll ever forget it. It was so loud, so clear. I remember just looking at Josh and laughing. So happy.

The nurse gave me a quick look of our boy just after he was out, then took him away to clean him up. So many people were talking but I remember Josh, and a nurse, saying he had big feet! I also remember the nurses saying "He was a 10". I initally thought "He weighs 10 lbs????" But later we found out that births are rated on a scale of 1-10 depending on how the birth goes and how the baby reacts when out. We found out later that little man's feet were a little blue when he was born, so our birth was rated a 9. Once he was wrapped up and ready to go to the nursery the nurse gave me another look and then Josh went with him to the nursery.

I actually took a nap while they were finishing up! It was a nice nap, I felt really rested! Anyway, once in recovery, my body temperature was a little low, so I had to stay in a little longer than normal, about an hour. But, they had this really neat heater that had a hose connected, they put the hose under my blankets, it was so cozy. I had toasty heat pumped into my bed! We gotta get one of those for home. Josh came in after a while and sat by me and told me all about Rutledge, his weight (9lbs 8oz), height(19 1/2 inch), what he looked like. He also showed me the pictures he had taken while in the nursery. He thought it was hilarious that after the nursery nurse had gotten him all cleaned up and nice and ready to go, Rutledge had a giant, massive poopy and she had to do it all over again.

After warming up, I was finally taken to my room! I was ready to see our baby boy again! We wheeled down the hall and were met by my family in the hall. We all made our way to our room, and a few minutes later Josh's family joined us. Then, they brought in sweet Rutledge. He was so beautiful, so sweet and peaceful. He looked just like his daddy! He was really alert then and his eyes were wide open, looking around.

I dont know who took the next three pictures but I love them. I remember these moments in my mind but it is so great to have them on film!

Holding Rutledge for the first time! Sweet baby boy!

Look at the best Husband in the world, he was by my side the entire time. Josh was so happy and proud of his little fella. He is the best daddy.

My boys are so sweet and handsome, look at that proud papa.

These are some pictures while we were at the hospital.
They look SO much alike! If only Rutledge had a beard.

Rutledge just looking like his daddy again!

Rutledge in his going home outfit.

Leaving the hospital with our baby boy!

On the way home, Rut's first car ride! He seemed a little concerned!

The crib (he still hasn't slept a night there...:))

Awesome, oh so comfy, gliding recliner that his daddy picked out.

Fun bookshelf that his Daddy built! I love it! I saw one in pottery barn kids and Josh built it in one afternoon!
